What Is Jaw Surgery?

Experienced Miami, FL Dentists

Jaw, or orthognathic, surgery is done to correct any irregularities that are noticed in the jaw bones. During surgery, your jaws and teeth will be realigned so that you can chew and eat better. You may even notice an improvement in the appearance in your face.

Jaw surgery is common due to the following problems:

Trouble chewing

Jaw misalignment (overbite, underbite, cross-bite)

Speech problems

Asymmetry in the face

Facial injuries

Birth defects

Sleep apnea

What Are Some Signs That You May Need To Have Emergency Jaw Surgery?

That being said, there are times when jaw surgery is an emergency. This includes:

Pain. There are times when the pain is so severe, surgery can't wait another minute, let alone a few weeks until you can have the procedure done.

Can't chew. If you can't chew to nourish your body, you aren't going to be able to wait for your procedure. It is going to need to be taken care of right away.

Broken jaw. If you have broken your jaw for any reason (fight, car accident, etc.), you may need to have surgery to repair it right away so that it doesn't heal improperly.

How Is This Procedure Done?

Prior to surgery, you will meet with your dentist or oral surgeon. He or she will take x-rays of your mouth to help plan the surgery for your specific needs. You are going to undergo general anesthesia during the procedure. Then, depending on your needs, your surgery will likely include the following:

An incision will be made. This usually occurs inside of your mouth so that you won't have any visible scars.

Remove some of your jawbone.

Move it into a better position.

Reattach the bone into place using screws, wires, and plates.

The incision will be closed using stitches and glue.

You may have to use rubber bands to keep your jaw in alignment while you heal.

There are many factors that might indicate a dental emergency is forthcoming, the first sign you may be approaching a dental emergency is a pain. Typically, this is the most obvious sign. If you're starting to feel pain in the tooth, it is important to get straight to the dentist before it becomes severe. Most dental emergencies or dental pain occur at night when the dentist is closed and you're unable to contact your dentists. So, the first sign you may be approaching a dental emergency is pain or sensitivity. Typically, pain or sensitivity means that the patient might have pulpitis or inflammation in the nerve or pulp of the tooth.

The average dentist will charge between $75 to $250 for an emergency visit. This will include X-rays and an exam. This does not typically include treatment for the emergency. Some dentists will offer a free consultation, although the treatment will never be free.
