What Is Bone Grafting?

Bone Grafting in Miami, FL

Bone grafting is when bone tissue is transplanted to another area of your body, where it is needed.

There are two different types of bone grafting:

Allograft. This uses bone from a deceased donor or a cadaver.

Autograft. When you use an autograft, you are using bone from inside your own body.

Why Would You Need A Bone Graft?

Bone grafting is done for many reasons. These include:

Fixing bones that were damaged from trauma or even surgery

Growing bone around dental implants (and other implants)

Filling in an area where the bone is missing to provide more stability

Helping to fuse two bones together

Why Would You Need Emergency Bone Grafts?

There are times when bone grafting needs to be done in an emergency situation. These include:

In surgery: A surgical procedure may require a bone graft due to the amount of damage that your dentist or surgeon finds once you are asleep.

Trauma: If you are in an accident or a fight, you might have significant damage to your jaw and teeth. If you lose several of your teeth, a bone graft may be necessary to stabilize and reinforce your jaw.

How Is This New Procedure Done?

Though you may only need local anesthesia, there are times when general anesthesia is used for bone grafts. An incision will need to be made so that your dentist can see the bone that needs the graft. Your dentist fuses new bone into your current bone for additional reinforcement. Over the next few months, your body will replace the graft with your own bone.

If you are having oral surgery, you may already be under anesthesia and your dentist will place the graft where it is needed, without having to do another procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long do all-on-4 dental implants last?

The all on four dental implants are a newer procedure and have only been available for about 20 years. The implants can last for 20 - 25 years depending on your oral health.

With that being said, they have a very high success rate and can last a lifetime with proper care. Implant Center of Miami ensures you leave educated after your treatment to maximize the usage of your implants.

  • How many teeth are in All-on-4?

The all-on-4 dental implants procedure uses four implants to support a full arch of teeth. Generally the impalnts support 10 - 14 teeth.

This can be either a upper or lower set of teeth.

All-on-4 is a great option for patients who are missing all of their teeth, or who have failing teeth that need to be replaced.

  • What is an All-on-4 dental implant procedure?

The all on four dental implant procedure is a new way to replace all of your teeth with dental implants.

It is a minimally invasive procedure that can give you a brand new smile in just one day.

All on four dental implants are placed in the jawbone and then topped with a full set of dentures or a bridge to give you a more natural feeling smile compared to alternatives such as dentures.

  • Can I replace all of my teeth with dental implants?

Yes, you can have all of your teeth removed and replaced with implants.

However, this is a very invasive procedure and we usually only recommend it for patients who are missing some or all of their teeth. For single tooth replacements, we always recommend dental implants.

  • Are All-on-4 comfortable?

All-on-4 are designed to be comfortable for the patient. The dental implants are placed in strategic locations in the jaw and the replacement teeth are attached to them.

This gives the patient a more natural bite and feel to their teeth. All-on-4 also distribute the biting force evenly across all of the implants, which makes them stronger and more durable than traditional dentures.

  • How painful is the all-on-4 dental implant procedure?

The all-on-4 dental implant procedure is a surgery, so there will be some discomfort afterwards.

However, the pain is usually manageable with over-the-counter or prescription pain medication.

Most patients report that the pain and discomfort from the surgery decreases significantly after the first few days.

During the surgery however, patients report no pain at all thanks to modern medicine. If you have questions about medication and the surgery, please call us to get more accurate information.

Which bone is used for bone grafting in the mouth? There are several different types of bone graft material available for grafting after an extraction or before a dental implant. The most commonly used bone graft materials in the United States are allograft, xenograft and autograft. Allograft is the most commonly used bone graft material. Allograft means the bone graft material comes from another human. It is a donor tissue that is very safe to use, and the body receives it very well. Autograft is another type of bone grafting material. Autograft means that the bone has been taken from the candidate who has been... who is receiving the bone. This means it is your own bone being placed into the graft. Many times the graft material can be taken from the hip or other parts of the jaw. Xenograft is the third type of bone graft material that is most commonly used in the United States, and this means it is coming from another type of animal. Bovine or cow bone, is most commonly used, and porcine or pig bone, is also used. Sometimes a doctor will choose to mix all three together to increase the strength and longevity of the graft. Autograft is most likely to be received by the patient since it is their own bone. This is the best type of graft material used, but it has risks in the donor site. Allograft is also well-received by the patient and does not have any more avidity associated with a donor site, since it is a donor tissue and comes in a vial. This type of material is also well-received by the body and typically will be replaced within a few months by the patient's own bone. Xenograft or bone graft material from another animal, is used many times when the patient needs something that will last longer or hold the space for a greater amount of time. Xenograft can be found two years or even more within the recipient site when looked at histologically. So the three most common types of bone graft material being used for dental implants are autograft, allograft, and xenograft. It is best that your doctor chooses which one would be best for your scenario.

How long does it take to recover from a bone graft in the mouth? We have discussed the topic of bone graft in other articles, and the answer to this question really depends on which type of bone graft you are having done. A socket preservation graft should take three to four months of healing time. This means that the site will then be ready to receive a dental implant. A sinus augmentation may take from four months all the way up to nine months to heal. This means that the bone will then be ready to receive the dental implants. Because of the size of the augmentation and the nature of it, the healing time is much longer than that of a socket preservation. A ridge augmentation bone graft may also take up to six months or more to heal. Your doctor will let you know how long it will take for your bone graft, and may take additional CT scans or x-rays to verify that it is ready to receive a dental implant.

When you are receiving a dental bone graft, many times the doctor is removing the tooth and placing a bone graft material on the same day. This type of bone graft is called a socket preservation. In this case, there will be no additional pain associated with placing the bone graft. The same amount of pain you would have had for the extraction will be what you have with the bone graft as well. No additional pain should come from placing this bone graft. Many times, patients will need advanced bone grafting. In this case, a higher rate of morbidity or pain is associated with the graft. A sinus augmentation may be related to sinus pain or pain on the ridge. A ridge augmentation may also be related to swelling, pain, and bruising. The average bone graft for socket preservation does not hurt. Advanced bone grafting can be a bit more painful, but if the doctor gives you antibiotics, steroids, and anti-inflammatory medication, this pain will be decreased. Also, if the patient is responsible and places ice on the outside of their cheek for 15 minutes on and off as directed by their doctor, the pain will also decrease.
